After the Second World War, Crewe produced its first automobiles in 1946 with the Bentley MkVI, followed by the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith in 1947 and Silver Dawn in 1948. Being one of the first models with factory-built all-steel coachwork, the Silver Dawn was essentially a Bentley MkVI except for the installation of a single Stromberg or Zenith carburetor.

The Silver Dawn was one of the first automobiles to come out of Crewe after World War II. The Silver Dawn was one of the first models with all-steel coachwork created in the factory. Released in 1948, the RR Silver Dawn was among the first models to have factory-built all-steel coachwork.
While a 4.257 liter-capacity engine initially powered it, a 4.566-liter engine was introduced not long after after this luxurious car first hit the road.
The MkVI’s production ended in August 1952, and the R Type, which effectively had a “bigger boot” version because of the doubled luggage capacity, took its place. Both the MkVI and the R Type have grown in popularity as “specials,” many of which have been and still are being maintained by devoted enthusiasts.
The 1952–1955, now incredibly sought-after R Type ‘Continental’ models were also only available as a rolling chassis. Its powerful engine distinguished it from being the fastest four-seat production car.
The only significant mechanical difference between the Silver Dawn and a Bentley MkVI or R Type was the addition of a single Stromberg or Zenith carburetor.
The Silver Dawn debuted three years after the Wraith and served as a symbol of change, and it was the first Rolls Royce to have a sheet steel body. Therefore, individual bodywork became an option rather than the norm.
The Bentley MkVI was built using the same technical framework as the Silver Dawn. The car was significantly different from the Rolls Royce models it was based on, even though it also had a factory body. The Bentley R-Type, the MkVI’s replacement, was the last model to have significant features that set it apart from other vehicles in the same family.
